Social Centre for Orphans in Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso)

School and Shelter for orphans of mothers/fathers who have died of AIDS.

The Centre offers pre-school education according to their age, plus the required food and basic hygiene. It currently accepts 71 boys and girls aged between three and six years old, and it runs fun educational activities.

The children arrive at 7:00 am to start the day, and they receive a breakfast adapted to their age. Afterwards, the different activities start. They are divided into two age groups:

1) 3 and 4 years olds.

2) 5 and 6 years olds.

Until 11:00 am they take part in fun educational activities, which build numeracy and literacy skills in French (official language of the country), and encouraging respectful attitudes, education, sociability and self-esteem.

At the end of the class, the children tidy up, then wash themselves before going to lunch at 11:30h. After lunch, the children help to wash the dishes and tidy everything away before 12:30h, when parents or carers come to pick them up, or the van is used to take them to their home town.

This van, bought by Delwende, allows many children living far away to access the Centre. It makes at least two trips per day to all the neighbourhoods in Ouagadougou that need it.

You can see in this video how children need a few days to adjust to the Centre and have fun learning.

As a sample of the Centre’s work, we show you the testimony of one of the current workers and mother of some of the children who have been educated in it, received in April this year 2015.
